To Be A Better Photographer-Study And Practice These Two Things
This post was inspired by working with photographers during my Introduction To Photography Class

As I wrote in a previous post, instead of getting a new camera, develop a new mindset when it comes to your photography.
And, instead of paying for a new camera begin paying attention to what we do as photographers.
Instead of Getting A “Better Camera” Understand What We As Photographers…
If ya look up the word photography you’ll discover that it has its origins in Greece. And what it means is “writing with light”.
Admittedly, I take some liberties with the meaning.
To be specific, instead of thinking of photography as writing with light, I think of photography as “communicating with a recording of light”.
I mean, after all, writing is a form of communication. And when I think of communicating, It makes me think about the intent of my communication.
And instead of using a pen (the tool) to communicate with a recording of words we, as photographers, usually use a camera (the tool) to communicate with a recording of light.
To Be A Better Photographer-Study And Practice These Two Things
Camera Operation
Because we gotta learn to use a camera as the tool we use to communicate, we gotta learn to use a camera.
And in order to learn to use a camera, we gotta use a camera.
To repeat, we gotta learn to use a camera because what we do with a camera is an important part of how we compose our photographs.
To be sure, everything we do with our camera is an element of our composition.
Therefore, we’ve gotta pay attention to what we do with our camera while keeping in mind what elements of composition we’re dealing with.
Additionally, just like all pens may look different, they’re all nothing more than a writing tool.
In a similar way, goes it for cameras.
However, even though all cameras do the same thing they do the same thing differently.
And this is where our owners manual comes in.
But, the printed version of the owner’s manuals that usually comes in the box with our falls short in terms of helping us to learn to use the camera to it’s fullest potential.
With that in mind, here’s how to get the best version of your owners manual for your camera.
Photography
Granted, we gotta study photography.
And to repeat, to be a better photographer, study and practice these two things.
And the way we study these two things is by studying light and how we record light.
In short, light is the raw material that we use to create our photographs and the camera is the tool we use to as the photographer to record light.
