Can We Be Better Photographers?
This post was inspired by speaking with photographers who are considering working with me as their photography instructor.
Can We Be Better Photographers?
Foundationally, that’s a good question. However, it’s not a question that digs deep enough.
In addition, we gotta ask a series of follow-up questions to REALLY improve our work.
Are We Willing To Do Anything About Being Better Photographers?
Most importantly, how we answer the above question, our work improves or it stays the same.
Of course, if we’re not willing to do anything, then our work stays the same.
And, If we’re willing to do something, we gotta ask ourselves…
How Do We Think We Need To Improve?
Because this is a question that we can only answer for ourselves, it’s gonna require some cool, critical analysis of what do we mean by “better”.
And, please. Since answering this question a critique of our work, we should NOT look to others to critique our work. Because the most useful critiques are self-critiques.
Why Do We Want To Improve?
Furthermore, I think, by answering the question of why we get clarity on purpose. And if we clarify purpose, we create a strong desire to keep working to improve or work.
Additionally the “why” can create direction and priority of practice/effort.
What Efforts Are Needed To Improve?
Without a doubt, this is where the rubber meets the road.
Because, without skillful and appropriate effort, nothing happens.
And, of course, what efforts we make are dependent on how we answer the previous questions.
Sometimes we need to improve in terms of camera/equipment/technology operation.
And other times we may need a better understanding of photography.
However, most of the time we can use improvement in both of the previous skills.
