Many times during class, the photographers I work with will use language like that when talking about camera operation.
A camera is a machine and as a machine we use it as a tool to measure, evaluate and to make a picture.
A camera isn’t human.
You are.
A machine doesn’t think or know.
You do.
Don’t confuse the machine with the one working the machine.
It’s the unique human element that makes pictures so unique.
