Just You And Your Camera Are Enough

Just You And Your Camera Are Enough- A blog post based on conversations with participants during my photography classes.

Just You And Your Camera Are Enough

Just you and your camera are enough to make a photograph.  As a result, just you and your camera are enough for you to be a photographer.

But what about a lens? Nope ya don’t even need a lens. For the purpose of making a photograph, Pinhole cameras don’t use lenses.

Some people would argue, and I wouldn’t argue with their argument,  that ya don’t even need a camera.  But even so, ya need some light sensitive material and some light. —Photograms.

What Kind Of Camera Do We Need?

Back to the cameras.

We don’t need a fancy, schmancy camera. The camera on our phone will do.

What’s the best camera? Whatever one we got.

When’s the best time to make a picture? Whenever we get the impulse to make one.

Photography is about observing and recording light.

A camera is a light recording tool. Light is EVERYTHING we see.

In tonight’s Introduction To Photography class everyone had a different camera. All were DSLRs that were being operated in manual exposure mode. Compared to the camera on an iphone, a DSLR is a fancy, schmancy camera. While a DSLR offers more options in terms of composition than an iphone, both of those cameras are light recording tools.

Here’s  the funny thing about tonight’s class. After we were done in terms of what was scheduled to be covered in terms of operating the DSLRs, discussing controlling elements of composition with the DSLR in manual exposure mode and giving the homework assignment based on what we discussed, we had a brief “unscheduled class”  after class about how to control elements of composition with everyone’s iphone.

Like I said before.

We don’t need a fancy, schmancy camera. The camera on our phone will do.

What’s the best camera? Whatever one we got.

When’s the best time to make a picture? Whenever we get the impulse to make one.

Just you and your camera are enough.
