Getting and Giving – The Importance Of Critiquing Our Own Work.

Without a doubt, photography critiques help us to be better photographers.

But here’s the thing, the first critique should be the one that the photographer gets from themselves.

In other words, the critiques that are the most useful are the one that we give to our own work.

And, as I’ve said before, I think that the best critiques are self-critiques.

Yup.  We gotta be our own critics.

Because a good, appropriately critical, critique puts the work into perspective and context for the photographer.

And can serve as information to those viewing the photograph.

So, we gotta start with a self-critique first.

But, as I said it’s gotta be a good one.

Specifically, a critique based on the intent of composition and how the elements of composition, including camera operation, support the intent of composition or detract from the intent of the composition.

In other words, as a simple “I like’ or “I don’t like’ ain’t enough.

What’s the Use Of a Critique?

In short, critiques help us develop a visual vocabulary.

Specifically, a “visual vocabulary” that describes the process and effect of photographic composition.

Furthermore, this visual vocabulary helps us to improve our photography.

And, as a plus, when we learn to critique our work in a skillful and appropriate manner,  we learn to critique the work of others in a skillful and appropriate way.
