Are Photographers Artists ?
Recently, a friend was going through pictures offered for sale and licensing on my website. And while viewing the photographs she referred to me as an artist. As a result of the word “artist”, I cringed because I’m uncomfortable with “art” when art is viewed in a limited way. Specifically, when art is considered to be something special and “above”.
Let’s keep this simple. According to the dictionary, there are a few definitions. However, all the definitions refer to “creative activity”.
Considering the above definition I’m gonna say anyone involved in any creative activity. Therefore, not limited to the creative activity that produces, paintings, photography, poetry, music, etc. And since we’re all “creatively active” all of the time, then we’re all artists. And yet, we create different “art”. Furthermore, some art we create for love and some art we create for money.
In other words, I think that everyone is a creator. I think that we all “create”, all the time. In other words, I don’t limit “art” to “the arts”.
If everyone is an artist then photographers are artists. When I’m creating a photograph then, at that moment, my art is photography. However, when I’m tossing food together to create something to eat then my art, at that moment, is creating something to eat. To be clear, I don’t think art is elevated, I think it’s base. In other words, it’s common and foundational. While it may take different forms, at the base of it all, it’s creation. In short, everything is a creation, so everything is art.
Workin’ a camera, on the other hand, that takes some practice and skill.
