When it comes to our photography studies and training, overstating the importance of prerequisites is nearly impossible.
Prerequisite – A definition
In almost everything we do, the importance of prerequisites becomes obvious. And, of course, prerequisites also apply to our photography studies and practice.
So, for setting a standard definition and our conversation, a prerequisite is necessary for something else to happen or exist.
The Importance of Prerequisites When It Comes to Photography
From what I understand, the word photography is Greek in origin and means “drawing or writing with light.”
As photographers, we can see the prerequisites needed for “writing with light”/making a picture. Specifically, we need light, light recording material, a means or method to record light, and, I’d say most importantly, the desire and intent to make a picture. Because without any of those prerequisites, we couldn’t make a photograph or describe ourselves as photographers.
The Importance of Prerequisites When It Comes to Our Photography Studies and Practice
When it comes to our photography studies and training, overstating the importance of prerequisites is nearly impossible. And as I stated previously, the desire and intent to make a picture is THE foundational prerequisite that drives us to be photographers.
It seems that many of us don’t think of ourselves as photographers based on how we see our level of skill. However, no matter what we believe, if we make photographs, we’re photographers.
But, it may get to the point where we want to be better photographers. And this is where we need to be careful of getting ahead of ourselves when it comes to our studies and practice.
Because when we get ahead of ourselves, we’ve neglected the prerequisites that are important for improving our skills. For example, If a photographer were to take lighting with portable flash class without the appropriate foundational studies and practice, then the lighting with portable flash class would be difficult and probably not very useful for the photographer. And doing that would likely lead to frustration and discouragement and hinder our progress. And for what it’s worth, I know that from first-hand experience, and because of that experience, I fully understand the importance of prerequisites.
