As a photography teacher, I often get calls from people (photographers) who say something along the line of “I want to learn photography, but I don’t have a camera.” The truth is we can learn photography, but we don’t realize the camera that we don’t think we have is probably already with us.
I Want to Learn photography, but I Don’t Have a Camera.
First, let’s reframe our ideas about cameras. Because if we’re limiting our view about cameras to a DSLR, then we’re limiting our opportunity to learn about photography. And to clarify, let’s define a camera as a device (usually light-tight) that records light onto light-sensitive material. So it follows that the camera on your phone IS a camera that you can use to learn photography. Furthermore, there are distinct advantages to using the camera on your phone, such as it’s simple to use.
Different Cameras. Different Results.
Of course, there are many different types of cameras out there. For example, there’s DSLR, SLR, medium format, large format, compact, hybrid, etc. And of course, we can use whatever camera we have to make a picture. And since we can use whatever camera we have to make a picture, we can learn about photography and what we do as photographers while creating photographs.
We Probably Already Have a Camera.
In conclusion, If we’ve got a camera on our phone, we’ve got a camera. And that camera is certainly good enough to use to learn photography. Additionally, before we plunk down money for a more complex camera than the one we have on the phone, I strongly recommend using the camera on our phone to learn photography. Because if we do that, it will not only allow us to know about photography, it will consequently better prepare us to buy a more complex camera when we NEED it, not WANT it.
