Photographic Technique: Well Done And Overdone

A technique that becomes popular among photographers tends to become an overdone fad instead of a well done element of composition used skillfully and appropriately when needed.

Just because you know how to use a technique doesn’t mean you have to use it all of the time. If you do, then the technique defines you as a photographer. You get to be known as the photographer who uses such and such technique.

If you depend on the technique du jour your work becomes visually diluted among the clutter of all the other images that use the same technique. You might photograph a different scene, but your photograph has a visual similarity to all the other work out there that uses the same technique.

Don’t depend on a fad to be the primary compositional element of your work.

Fads go out of style.

After the fad fades, what do you have left?
