Missed The Picture? Don’t Worry About it.

“I’m worried that I’ll miss the picture”. That’s something I hear often during my Introduction To Photography class.

Here’s the truth. I miss a lot of pictures for a lot of reasons and I think other photographers who are honest will say the same thing.

I’m not sure when this happened, but I’ve come to accept  that missing pictures is a part of being a photographer. I know it seems contradictory since, for some of us,  our goal is to capture a moment in time, but that’s  the way it is. At least for me.

The fact of the matter is I’m seeing pictures in my mind all of the time. Today during my travels I missed several pictures that I saw unfolding in front of me. I did not have a camera with me. C’est la vie. (That’s about the extent of my French by the way).

Your photography should be pleasurable, not filled with angst.  If you miss a picture, don’t worry about it, they’ll be more pictures to make.

Seeing a picture is a skill in itself. Even though you missed the picture, since seeing a picture  is the first step in creating a picture, revel in the fact that you were aware enough to see a good picture.

Learn to see pictures.
