During the spring and summer, leaves get their green color from chlorophyll, a pigment needed for photosynthesis. As the sunlight wanes during the Fall the chlorophyll moves from the leaves to the main body of the tree to nourish the tree throughout the winter. As the green chlorophyll recedes from the leaves the other pigments that are always there are made visible.
