While I was walking somewhere near East Bangor, PA. I saw leaves scattered in the snow on the ground. The snow had seemed to melt around the edges of the leaves, leaving indentations/shadowed areas around the leaves.
I framed the leaf vertically. This is something I rarely do but because the pattern of this particular leaf, a Pin Oak, reminded me of a Christmas Tree the framing seemed appropriate.
Because the leaf was lying in the snow, I wanted to impart a cold “feeling” into the photograph so I set my white balance to fluorescent because, since the kelvin (color) temperature of fluorescent light is less than the kelvin temperature of the cloudy lighting conditions that were available, I knew I would get a slightly blue color cast to the white snow.
I metered off of the white snow and overexposed by somewhere between 2 or three stops. My intention was to bring the snow as close to white as possible via exposure, but leave a darker blue cast in the darker/shadowed/ areas of the leaf that were caused by the melting under/around the leaf.
